Group Design Project 2026 - PLUS+FABRIK

Reimagining the Fassfabrik: The PLUS+FABRIK

As part of this year’s GBS Summer University, the PLUS+FABRIK project invited students to rethink the future of the historic Fassfabrik site—a former barrel factory in Vienna’s Liesing district today known for its creative studios, cultural events, and circular construction initiatives.

Approaching the site through an eco-social lens, participants envisioned a liveable, inclusive, climate-resilient, and carbon-positive neighborhood that maintains the area's social and experimental character. The multi-scale proposals addressed key contemporary urban challenges: balancing adaptive reuse with new construction, creating affordable housing, enhancing urban greenery and biodiversity, and embedding circular construction principles into high-performance architecture.

After weeks of intensive masterplanning and architectural design, student groups presented their final results at TUtheSky, celebrating the completion of their projects with a festive catered reception and certificate handover.
